When You Can’t Find the Better in “For Better or Worse”

Marriage
Does your marriage feel a little heavy on the "worse" in the for better or worse phrase? You're totally not alone! I think all married people can attest to feeling that way at some point in our marriages, and I know I can for sure! If you're feeling lost in the worse of your marriage, click through to read what I have to say about it!

Welcome to another Super Short Sunday post! I’ve realized that I have SO much that I want to share with you, but sometimes it’s just a quick thought here and there. Sundays have become a time for me to be candid with y’all and share what’s been on my mind, what I’ve been learning, and what I’ve been doing that’s been working. I love being able to share some of my more personal struggles and thoughts in a super quick post, so let’s do this!

See if you can relate to this. When my husband and I got married, I happily said the marriage vows…even the “for better or worse” part. I was just so darn in love that NOTHING could make me falter or stumble in my marriage. I was sure of it. I just knew that with a love like ours, it wasn’t ever really going to get that bad, anyway. And if it did, well we would happily work through it, all smiles and joy, because we just love each other that much.

I’ve found that it rarely works out to be that simple.

Don’t get me wrong. I am the #1 supporter of marriage being stinkin’ awesome! I LOVE being married, and it’s one of the greatest things I’ve ever done and ever will do. But just a few nights ago, I found myself saying to my husband, “I just wanted it to be a little easier. When is it all going to fall into place?” If you’ve ever felt that in your own marriage, take heart. Marriage was never really promised to be easy. Marriage is supposed to be a mirror of how God loves the church. I don’t know about you, but from what I have read from the bible, it doesn’t seem like we’ve always been the easiest people for God to love. He does it perfectly and without wavering, but in my darkest days, I know that I must be acting like a real butt head. God loves me anyway.

That’s how it should be in our own marriages. When things get rough and it’s hard to find the better in “for better or worse”, keep doing your best to love your husband the way God loves us each and every day. Pray for God to show you the amazing parts of your marriage, and ask for His help in loving your husband through the good times AND the hard times. God loves us anyway, and we must love our husbands just the same.

Ephesians 22-30 – “22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body.”
