3 Tips to Help Prevent Anxiety

Self Development
Do you struggle with anxiety, worry, stress, nervousness, etc? I've been learning that it is a lot more common than I once thought, so I've started putting some tips together on how to kick it to the curb! This post is for you if you've been feeling overwhelmed by those feelings lately. Click through to read my tips!

If you were to ask my husband to honestly describe my personality, you might hear the words “anxious” or “stressed”. Those words would probably come after a long slew of beautiful, kind words…but they would be in there. Anxiety, stress, nervousness, and worry are all things that I have struggled with for a while now. There are days when I get it pretty under control, but I still have my moments in which I forget to trust in God’s faithfulness…and I break apart.

I’ve always been so surprised by the number of women that reach out and say they feel the exact same way! I truly thought that I was alone in this, but I’m finding more and more each day that other’s deal with the same things as me. Because of that, I feel like I would be doing a huge disservice to you if I didn’t share what I have been learning on my journey to finding calm and peace.

With that being said, today I’ll be sharing with you my Top 3 Tips for Preventing Anxiety! This post is for the girl that wants to fend it off before it ever even starts. I can’t promise you that these will work for you exactly, but I do know that I feel WAY better when I do these things consistently. Let’s do it!

1. Surround yourself with good vibes

AKA personal development and prayer! If you’ve been in any sort of DIY business before, you’ve probably heard that you need to be doing this. But I’m not talking about the kind of personal development needed to become a good leader, convince people to buy your product, or build a team. To keep the good vibes only, you’ve got to figure out the actual root of your anxiety and stress.

So what the heck does all of this mean?

Try your best to narrow down the root of what is bothering you. What is the thing that seems to be giving you the most anxiety or stress? Once you find out what that is, aim to surround yourself with positive messages regarding that topic as often as you can. For instance, if the state of your marriage is giving you grief, surround yourself with as many marriage tools as you can. You might listen to a marriage podcast on your way to work and at the gym, search through the bible for scriptures pertaining to what you are struggling with, look up YouTube videos with a title that seems like it might help, or pick up a book at the library that teaches you how to start fixing the problem.

When it comes to personal development, I’ve found that it helps to be as specific as possible. Yes, it’s great to surround yourself with the basic feel-good stuff on a daily basis. But when it comes to preventing anxiety, you’ll want to be specific so you can start to fix the problem before you get upset about it again!

2. Do something each day that makes you happy

This sounds pretty simple right? But think about it, how many times per week do you actually do something JUST for you that doesn’t have anything to do with anyone else? Probably not often, it at all.

I’m right there with you.

Before realizing that this was a huge step in preventing my anxious feelings, I always thought I was doing things for myself, but it turned out to be some backwards thing involving others. For instance, I would consider me time writing a blog post, going grocery shopping, or cleaning the house while listening to music. Now, don’t get me wrong. All of those things are awesome! And I love doing them because they can be relaxing, and I know how much it can benefit those that I care about.

However…

Those things are all things that I’m doing for other people. Even if I enjoy them, it’s still not that uninterrupted, good-for-your-soul, sometimes mindless (ha!) thing that I need to do at least once a week to keep me in high spirits. Think about the things that you liked to do before you got so busy doing things for other people and chasing your goals that you forgot. Mine are reading a book, watching my favorite show on t.v. (without using my phone), taking a bath, going to the spa, taking a walk, experimenting with a new recipe in the kitchen, taking a nap, etc.

Whatever your things are, take the time to schedule something in at least once this week. Doing so will keep your tank full so that you’re better able to handle the hard stuff that comes up later. This is all about making yourself as happy as possible before anxiety and worry potentially strike. You’ll have a better chance to bypass it altogether!

3. Spend time resting in God for 5 minutes

Ooooo, this is a good one, girl! I know that it may seem a little counterproductive to just stop and sit when you already have so much on your plate. The busyness of life is probably one of the things stressing you out and causing that anxiety, am I right? Well, you’re going to have to just trust me on this one!

When we take time out of our day to just rest with God and ask Him to give us what we need, He will deliver on that! There have been so many times when I don’t know how I am going to get through the next day with the little sleep I’ll be getting that night, so I ask God to give me that rest and rejuvenation that only He can…and He does! He wants us to trust Him and run to Him, and He cares for us!

Most of the things that will end up causing anxiety (in my opinion from my experience) are the things of this world. Maybe it’s a promotion at work, a big test coming up, picking an outfit to wear on your dinner date with your husband, growing your social media following, trying to lose weight, etc. Those things can all be really important depending on who you are and what your goals are, but all of those things are also extra. God calls us to fear Him, walk in His ways, love Him, serve Him with all our heart and soul, and to keep His commandments. There are many things that go into that such as loving those around you, giving of yourself at times, and being a good friend…but when it comes down to it, what God asks of us is very simple. We tend to complicate it.

If you feel yourself getting overly stressed or anxious often, it may be that you need to rest in the Lord. Commit to just being with the Lord for just 5 minutes a day, share with him about what you’re going through, and ask for His heavenly help. I can tell you from my experience with this that simplifying things and leaning on God’s understanding and plan for my life has removed a ton of anxiety! And it just keeps getting better!

“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord…” -Deuteronomy 10:12,13

***These tips are all things that I hope really help you on your journey, but they are not the only tips out there! If you are struggling and feel like you need more help than this blog post provides, don’t hesitate to seek help from a professional! These are just a few things that have helped me, but I am definitely not a professional or the end source for help!***
